Vocations

Dominicans follow Jesus wherever he leads.

We are today’s apostles - living and spreading the Good News!

Do you hear the call to be a preacher?
Preaching the Word of God is the primary mission of the Dominican Order. As Dominicans, we continue to draw deeply from the Order’s roots and are supported by the “pillars.” Recognizing the need to read the “signs of the times,” the church enters the third millennium with Domninicans in the vanguard. Friars of the Order are guardians of hope and truth, proclaiming the gospel of peace and justice.
The need today for spirituality and truth is great.
The need for well-informed and effective preaching is great. We live in a culture of individualism and materialism that often provides false happiness, hope, and peace. There is a conflict of values. How can the poor want to be rich when the rich denigrate the poor? How can the disenfranchised win the election? Or the last in line be first to receive favor? The glut of materialism and the practice of violence have taken a toll. But, even in today’s climate of distrust, there is increasing hunger for the transcendent, for an experience of God that touches our lives. In our preaching, we connect the Word of God with the experience of the people in ways that will make a difference, that will transform lives.

Fr. Andrew-Carl Wisdom, O.P., Promoter of Vocations, with Come and See participants.

A Vocation Prayer

Blessed Father Dominic,
preacher of God’s grace,
you promised to assist us
even after your death.

Intercede for us before God
to help us encourage
more men and women
to follow our way of life,
the way of a preacher.

Bless us in our common life, study,
prayer, and ministry,
that our lives together
may be a joyful witness
creating a desire in others
to join the Sacred Preaching

Amen
