Novitiate

Novitiate

The Dominican novitiate is the house of religious formation for the novices (first year in formation to be a Dominican Friar) under the direction of the novice master. The novitiate for the Province of St. Albert the Great is located at St. Dominic Parish in Denver, Colorado.

After a man discerns his vocation to the Dominicans, the Order of Preachers, with the vocation director, he completes the application process and after he is accepted to enter the Order, he enters a one-year period of initial formation as a novice. At the end of the novitiate year and after much discernment and approval by the local Dominican community and the prior provincial, the novices profess simple vows and move to the next phase of their initial formation and begin their formal graduate studies at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri. The professed brothers live at the studentate there and continue their formation for the next five to seven years.

A Vocation Prayer

Blessed Father Dominic,
preacher of God’s grace,
you promised to assist us
even after your death.

Intercede for us before God
to help us encourage
more men and women
to follow our way of life,
the way of a preacher.

Bless us in our common life, study,
prayer, and ministry,
that our lives together
may be a joyful witness
creating a desire in others
to join the Sacred Preaching

Amen

Br. Dominic McManus, O.P.

“The truth which we seek daily to know better and love more is not a proposition; rather, it is a person—the person of our Blessed Lord. Once we have grasped this, that when Jesus identifies Himself with the Truth that He has sanctified all truth, then we find ourselves compelled, not by fear, nor by ambition, but by the very love of God, to the discipline of study. In time this discipline orders not only our thoughts, but our affections also, and so our love for God and neighbor is perfected in contemplative study.”
