CONFLICT AND COMPETITION
The Latin American Church in a Changing Environment
edited by Edward L. Cleary and Hannah Stewart-GambinoChanges in Latin America have created a new political game with new rules, argue the authors, and the Catholic church, the "voice of the voiceless" in the 1980s, will find itself increasingly constrained in its political activity in the 1990s. The church will have to respond to limits placed on it by the Vatican and by strairted human and financial resources. It also faces competition from a massive surge of evangelical Protestantism. The authors address these new situations, looking in depth at Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela.
