The Work Begins

A block of the hardest type
of white, statuary marble
was quarried near the top
of Monte Altissimo,
in the region of Versilia, Italy,
not far from Pietrasanta.
The 70,000 pound block
was then brought to the
Daprato Studios in Pietrasanta
where the carving was done.
Archbishop Camozzo of Pisa
blessed the block of marble,
the studio, the tools,
and the sculptor.
Two craftsmen,
Alfred and Caesar,
helped remove 50,000
pounds of marble.

Actual carving began September 25, 1956 and was unassisted, because the forms were sought directly in the marble.
