  1. Pre-Novitiate
  2. Novitiate
  3. Theological Education
  4. Ongoing Formation
Pre-Novitiate
Held in Denver, this is the time prior to arriving in Denver where the candidates recieve the habit of St. Dominic in which the men get a first hand experience of life in the Order of Preachers. The men are introduced to the daily prayer routine of the Province and the way in which we sing. Several classes are held on many subjects and saints of the Order. This time is designed to give the candidates a running start as the novitiate approaches.
Novitiate
The candidates arrive in Denver and immediatley occupy their rooms in the novitiate. They witness the first vows of the previous novice class and then go on retreat before being vested in the habit. Then they spend the year living the life of a brother and discern God’s call through many activites such as lectures, meetings, meals, social events and outreach opportunities.
Theological Education
After taking first vows, the brothers move to St. Louis and begin their philosophical and theological education. They further discern God’s calling and engage in the full life as a vowed Dominican. If the brother believes this is God’s will, and the senior community agrees, the brother takes solemn vows proclaiming his desire to live as a Dominican for life. Ordination to the diaconate and priesthood follow shortly thereafter.
Ongoing Formation
Education as a Dominican does not end with ordination and a first assignment in one of our ministries. Many brothers go on for furhter studies and attain doctorates in theology or canon law. In every case, all brothers are constantly adding to their knowledge through further education, whether in formal schooling or lector meetings in the priory or house where they live.

A Vocation Prayer

Blessed Father Dominic,
preacher of God’s grace,
you promised to assist us
even after your death.

Intercede for us before God
to help us encourage
more men and women
to follow our way of life,
the way of a preacher.

Bless us in our common life, study,
prayer, and ministry,
that our lives together
may be a joyful witness
creating a desire in others
to join the Sacred Preaching

Amen

Br. Dominic McManus, O.P.

“The truth which we seek daily to know better and love more is not a proposition; rather, it is a person—the person of our Blessed Lord. Once we have grasped this, that when Jesus identifies Himself with the Truth that He has sanctified all truth, then we find ourselves compelled, not by fear, nor by ambition, but by the very love of God, to the discipline of study. In time this discipline orders not only our thoughts, but our affections also, and so our love for God and neighbor is perfected in contemplative study.”
